WELLCOME T0 my weekly conversation with musicians/ poets/ actors/ dancers and quite frankly anyone with grain of creativity from the North of England.
They are invited to my to my narrowboat in the centre of Leeds, where we have a tête-à-tête about their lives, creative process and anything else that pops-up! It’s informal sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but never never boring……
My aim is to shine a light on these ‘characters’ from the North in a weekly podcast and a special monthly cast with visiting artists that wash up on the river Aire……
Quick biog of the host:
I’m a singer songwriter born & bred in Leeds. I played guitar for a goth band in the capital of goth in the 80’s & went solo in the 90’s. I supported some of the greatest songwriters that ever lived - yeah I know, that’s a big statement, but in my opinion they where/are (Bowie/ The Cranberries/ Vic Chestnutt/ Townes Van Zandt, blahbalhblah). I still get a buzz playing live and writing and releasing my own songs.
In the ‘90s I moved to London, then to Brighton, then to Paris for several years, then back to Brighton then back to the middle of France. In 2022 I returned to the UK with the plan of getting to know this island and its people again.
I bought a narrowboat and went everywhere I could in all seasons for nearly 5 years. Only stopping for two weeks at a time then on my away along the canals and rivers…..
On my odyssey I met a lot of people and to be honest I bad mouthed the North and particularly my home town of Leeds. There was a bad toast in my month that I couldn’t get rid of. However, I was forced by personal reasons to head back north and finally dropped anchor in my birth town and then something strange happened - I fell in love with the place!!
Don’t get me wrong we still have problems ‘UP NORTH’, but there’s a kernel of something magical in some of characters, especially in the artistic community’s, that I felt impelled to document.
This isn’t really about me, it’s t’s an insight into the good, the bad and the ugly of THE NORTH OF ENGLAND
